DIY Eyelash Extensions: Are They a Good Idea?

15 October 2024

The Temptation of DIY Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash extensions have become a global beauty trend, including here in New Zealand. Many people consider getting these eye-transforming enhancements to boost their appearance and confidence. Some even think about doing it themselves at home, tempted by the idea of DIY eyelash kits. But are DIY eyelash extensions really worth it? Let’s break down the risks and why professional application is always the safest and best option.

Why DIY Eyelash Extensions are Appealing

It's easy to understand why DIY eyelash extensions have gained popularity. With tutorials, social media influencers promoting them, and the availability of DIY kits, many people consider giving it a go from the comfort of their own home. After all, it seems cheaper and quicker, right? The allure of skipping salon visits and the thought of achieving a full, voluminous lash look on your own is hard to resist.

But here’s the truth: while it may seem easy and convenient, DIY eyelash extensions come with significant risks and drawbacks.

The Dangers and Common Issues of DIY Eyelash Extensions

Attempting to apply lash extensions yourself is often much trickier than it appears. Here are the common issues people face:

  • Adhesive Hazards Professional-grade lash adhesives are formulated for trained use, with careful precision to ensure safety. When used improperly, these adhesives can cause serious irritation, allergic reactions, or even infections, especially around the delicate eye area. Most DIY kits don't use the same quality products as professionals, which can lead to poor results and potential harm.

  • Clumping and Matting One of the most common complaints of DIY lash extensions is the unsightly clumping and matting of lashes. Without proper technique, it’s easy to mistakenly glue multiple lashes together, creating a messy, unnatural look. This can not only ruin the appearance of your lashes but also cause discomfort and damage to your natural lashes.

  • Loss of Natural Lashes Incorrectly applying DIY lash extensions can stress and harm your natural lashes, potentially causing breakage or premature shedding. In severe cases, DIY mishaps could leave you with significantly fewer natural lashes over time.

  • Application Difficulty Applying lash extensions while keeping one eye open is not only tricky but can also compromise the precision needed to apply individual extensions properly. It requires exceptional coordination and can lead to poor placement, uneven lashes, or worse—damaging your natural lashes.

  • Time and Effort Contrary to the belief that DIY is a time-saver, applying lash extensions at home can take hours, especially for beginners. The process is often tedious, frustrating, and the result may not justify the time spent.

Expert Advice: Why Professionals Don’t DIY

Even lash technicians with years of experience don’t apply extensions on themselves. They know that the level of precision, skill, and safety needed requires another trained professional. This alone should give you pause when considering DIY. Lash professionals understand the potential hazards and how critical it is to use high-quality products and precise techniques for beautiful, safe results.

As a lashed studio owner, returning to work part-time after having a baby can be a challenge. But what happens when that baby is your third child, and they're a toddler? Well, let's just say it adds a whole new level of hilarity to the process of seeing clients again. First of all, forget about any semblance of a peaceful and relaxing environment. Gone are the days of soft lighting and the sounds of sweet tunes. Now your salon is a playground, complete with toys, snacks, and a toddler who thinks it's hilarious to interrupt your appointments by making noise, climbing on furniture, or demanding attention - she has been known to try and help wax the odd eyebrow! Speaking of appointments, be prepared for some interesting background noises. Instead of soothing music, your clients may hear the sounds of baby talk, Peppa Pig, or even a temper tantrum. You'll become an expert at calming your baby down, while simultaneously keeping your client comfortable and relaxed. And let's not forget about the interruptions. Your toddler will inevitably need something just when you're in the middle of an appointment. Whether it's a nappy change, a snack, or a hug, they will demand your attention at the most inconvenient times. And good luck trying to get them to be quiet while you're working on a client's lashes. You may end up having to resort to bribery or distraction tactics to keep them occupied. In conclusion, returning to work part-time with a toddler who is the third child can be a hilarious and chaotic experience. But it's also a reminder that life is messy, unpredictable, and full of surprises. So embrace the chaos, laugh at the absurdity, and remember that you're doing the best you can. And who knows, maybe your toddler will even inspire some creative new eyelash styles! For expert eyelash extensions in Christchurch contact the team at Lashed! Emily
